I am the daughter of refugees
Fundraising for refugees is personally important to me, both for Ukrainians during this time and other refugees around the world escaping conflict and seeking safety for their families.
I am a daughter of refugees.
Both of my parents were refugees to Canada.
My father and his family of 13 spent time in a refugee camp in Malaysia.
He still tells us stories of this time there, receiving a can of beans and rice each day from the Red Cross to survive on.
After being denied refugee status in both Australia and the US, Canada sponsored our large family.
And thanks to refugee support groups and programs, they were supported during this transition to a whole new country, new language, and new weather (they arrived in Montreal!).
My mother came to Canada later, after her older brothers and sisters sought safety in Japan and Canada.
My parents later met here in Canada, and I was born as a first generation Vietnamese Chinese Canadian daughter of refugees.
I wouldn't be here if my families hadn't left Vietnam, and so it is an honour and privilege to be able to host this event and raise funds for the direct needs and support of refugees.
It is also important to me that we have these opportunities as a community to check in with ourselves and with each other.
Much of what we are experience doesn't need to happen in isolation.
I know that conditioning tells us that we need to “toughen up" and go through our problems on our own, but these aren't individual challenges and only so much healing can happen individually.
In community we can be supported. We can lean on each other. We can recognize that we are not alone in navigating the challenges of the world.
I hope you'll join us.
