What fostering a puppy has taught me
Vietnam’s tropical winter usually consists of a damp and cold feeling – a great time to drink hot cups of tea, wear my sweaters and socks (yes, it gets that cold in Vietnam!), and stay warm and cosy.
Recently, helping me stay cosy is an adorable 3.5 month old puppy we call Moka Joe. We're helping to co-foster him for the week and preparing him for his new home.
I didn't grow up with pets and only in small parts of my adult life have I had much to do with animals, let alone raise a puppy so I have to say, it's a lot of work! And at the same time, Moka Joe has been one of my greatest sources of joy this week.
In the few days we've been with him, he has taught me so much. What I am enjoying the most is being playful. I am making noises, talking dog, singing, dancing around and rolling on the floor to play with him. I think he's enjoys it but also notably, I enjoy it!
Moka Joe has reminded me that playing is nourishing. In a world where we are in a rush to grow up, are told playing is only for kids, are always busy, are trying to control, or tend to be too serious, being playful is refreshing and healing. In play, we let go of our expectations, gently embrace our fears and invite ourselves to be creative.
My invite to you is this: take a few moments to PLAY! Whatever that is to you, whether you have a pet or not. Try something new. Draw. Twirl around in your kitchen. Sing in the shower. Pick up an instrument. Knit. Wrap presents this holiday season with ease and joy.
Do you have / have you ever had a pet? If so, what wisdom have they shared with you? Share it in the comments below and let me know – and feel free to include a picture too! I'd love to meet your pet 🤩
Wishing you a playful, joyful week ahead.
