"We'll see the way as we go"
Last week I was in Hanoi, Vietnam's bustling capital city with over 10 million people. I don't know the city well so relied on Google Maps to navigate the streets. As we headed out to dinner one evening, I used Google Maps to lead us to the restaurant. By using a map my intention was that we wouldn't get lost and it would lead us there via the quickest route.
After dinner as we exited the restaurant, I asked my partner, Dan, if I should pull out Google Maps again or if he could remember the way back to our hotel. He wisely replied, “We'll see the way as we go.” As we walked, without Google Maps, I noticed that we actually ended up reaching our destination quicker than what the map suggested.
Why am I telling you this story of walking around in Hanoi? Because the insight I had is this: keep taking the steps and actions towards your destination, even if you don't have a map of how to get there or if your plans have been flipped completely upside down, you'll see the way as you go.
We spend our lives planning (and stressing) and mapping out all the details of how, when, what we are going to do. But then life throws us a curveball - ie. the global pandemic, or don't like our jobs as much as we thought, or feel discouraged and unmotivated - and the map we had so carefully constructed for life won't help us.
But if we keep walking and going in the direction of your destination and intentions, our path will evolve and change and you'll find the way (maybe even a better path than your initial map!).
If you are feeling a bit stuck or overwhelmed right now, keep walking and taking small actions, you've got this.
Keep stepping on the mat.
Keep taking deep breaths.
Keep cultivating your joy.
Keep taking care of yourself.
Keep walking - no matter how small your steps are.
Take these steps even if you don't have Google Maps for your life right now amongst the constant change and uncertainty.
Reflection:
As you show up to take care of yourself and prioritize what you can control (versus what you can't control), notice what happens. How does it support you in being less stressed and anxious? How does it feel to live life with more trust and adaptability? What happens when you accumulate all these small steps that lead you to your destination?
